McDonnell Douglas DC-10/MD-11

McDonnell Douglas DC-10/MD-11

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 three-engine jet is one of the most distinctive wide-bodied aircraft and since the early 1970s has been operated by many airlines on medium- and long-distance routes throughout the world. Successfully flying passenger service for over 40 years, the DC-10 currently still flies for FedEx in an airfreight delivery role. Filled with design and construction information, background history, technical data, and rare images, this book describes the exciting story of this aviation legend as flown by such current and past airlines as Aeroflot, American, Delta, Eastern, KLM, Lufthansa, Northwest, Pan Am, Qantas, SAS, Swissair, United, and many others. Also, the US Air Force has been flying the KC-10 Extender aerial-refueling tanker variant since the early 1980s. Coverage of the follow-on MD-11 series of aircraft is also included.

The Story Of The McDonnell Douglas MD-11

The Story Of The McDonnell Douglas MD-11

After creating the successful but controversial DC-10 jetliner in the 1970s, McDonnell Douglas updated the type to create the MD-11 in the early 1990s. A lack of resources and time meant the MD-11 became much less a sales flop with a questionable safety record and much more a unique three-engines machine in the twin-jet era that went on to have a long and interesting career both in passenger operations and freight hauling. This book shows the development of the aircraft with a detailed look at the history of Douglas, the path through the DC-10 to the MD-11, its troubled entry into service, and its second wind as a reliable cargo hauler. The text is accompanied by a detailed history of every airframe, from delivery to retirement. A fascinating chapter in the history of the Jet Age.

Southern Pacific in the San Fernando Valley 1876-1996

Located north of the Los Angeles basin, the San Fernando Valley was home to a portion of both the San Joaquin main line and the Coast main line, and the entire Burbank Branch. Dawn of Infamy: A Sunken Ship, a Vanished Crew, and the Final Mystery of Pearl Harbor

Dawn of Infamy: A Sunken Ship, a Vanished Crew, and the Final Mystery of Pearl Harbor

As the Pearl Harbor attack began, a U.S. cargo ship a thousand miles away in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean mysteriously vanished along with her crew. What happened, and why?

On December 7, 1941, even as Japanese carrier-launched aircraft flew toward Pearl Harbor, a small American cargo ship chartered by the Army reported that it was under attack by a submarine halfway between Seattle and Honolulu. After that one cryptic message, the humble lumber carrier Cynthia Olson and her crew vanished without a trace, their disappearance all but forgotten as the mighty warships of the U.S. Pacific Fleet burned.

The story of the Cynthia Olson‘s mid-ocean encounter with the Japanese submarine I-26 is both a classic high-seas drama and one of the most enduring mysteries of World War II. Did I-26‘s commander, Minoru Yokota, sink the freighter before the attack on Pearl Harbor began? Did the cargo ship’s 35-man crew survive in lifeboats that drifted away into the vast Pacific, or were they machine-gunned to death? Was the Cynthia Olson the first American casualty of the Pacific War, and could her SOS have changed the course of history?

Based on years of research, Dawn of Infamy explores both the military and human aspects of the Cynthia Olson story, bringing to life a complex tale of courage, tenacity, hubris, and arrogance in the opening hours of America’s war in the Pacific.

Railroads of Milwaukee: Steam – Diesel – Electrics – Lake Boats

In this new 264-page book, 68 pages of which are in full color, author John Kelly explores the fascinating history of the city’s railroads, starting with the Milwaukee & Waukesha in 1847. By 1873 the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway–later the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific (“The Milwaukee Road”) opened a line to Chicago and the railroad was on its way.

The Milwaukee Shops and the Hiawatha legend, Skytops and Super Domes, and the story behind designer Brooks Stevens, are also featured. Kelly supplies copious data on not only the Milwaukee Road, but also the Chicago & NorthWestern’s freight and passenger service, including the 400 fleet. Kelly also writes about the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, America’s Fastest Interurban, the Skokie Valley Route and Electroliners. In the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company section, he reviews streetcars, interurbans and trackless trolley buses.

With the inclusion of the Lake Boats, the Pere Marquette, Chesapeake & Ohio, and Grand Trunk Western RR’s also come into the picture. In addition the book covers the Beer Line and the breweries, Milwaukee’s meatpacking industry, Milwaukee’s railroad stations and freight yards–a recipe for some great railroad reading.

Generously illustrated with 135 color and 362 black and white photos, maps and drawings, this limited edition hardcover volume will be a treasured keepsake for your library.

The Longest Ride

The Longest Ride

For his eighth birthday, Emilio Scotto received a World Atlas. Promptly he announced his plan to make a route that would pass through all the countries of the world, a route he named BLUE ROAD ONE. When, some years later, he found himself astride a black 1100 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, Blue Road One beckoned, and Scotto set off on a journey that would last more than a decade, take him virtually everywhere in the world, and land him in the Guinness Book of World Records. This is his story, a thrill ride that begins in his native Argentina, crosses Panama in the tumultuous time of Noriega, Mexico in the midst of an earthquake, and finds him broke in L.A. where, in a chance meeting, Muhammad Ali gives him fifty dollars and a signed book. Breaching the Iron Curtain, crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie, being blessed by the Pope, set upon by cannibals in Sierra Leone, fleeing Somalia on a freighter, Scottos adventures would be unbelievable if they werent true. His tale of touring the world from Tunisia to Turkey, Petra to Afghanistan, Yugoslavia to Singapore, traveling miles enough to take him to the moon and back, is unlike any ever told. Come along, for the ride of a lifetime.
