Introduced in 1999 by Allison and 2001 by General Motors, the Allison 1000- and 2000-series transmissions have become the most popular heavy-duty transmissions in production today. McDonnell Douglas DC-10/MD-11
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 three-engine jet is one of the most distinctive wide-bodied aircraft and since the early 1970s has been operated by many airlines on medium- and long-distance routes throughout the world. Successfully flying passenger service for over 40 years, the DC-10 currently still flies for FedEx in an airfreight delivery role. The Story Of The McDonnell Douglas MD-11
After creating the successful but controversial DC-10 jetliner in the 1970s, McDonnell Douglas updated the type to create the MD-11 in the early 1990s. A lack of resources and time meant the MD-11 became much less a sales flop with a questionable safety record and much more a unique three-engines machine in the twin-jet era that went on to have a long and interesting career both in passenger operations and freight hauling. This book shows the development of the aircraft with a detailed look at the history of Douglas, the path through the DC-10 to the MD-11, its troubled entry into service, and its second wind as a reliable cargo hauler. Southern Pacific in the San Fernando Valley 1876-1996
Located north of the Los Angeles basin, the San Fernando Valley was home to a portion of both the San Joaquin main line and the Coast main line, and the entire Burbank Branch. The author traces the history of Southern Pacific in the area from the 1850s when it just an idea, the construction of both main lines and the branch line, the operational history of the railroad, and the end of the Southern Pacific in 1996. Iconic locations such as Glendale station, Burbank Junction, and the three tunnels in Chatsworth through Santa Susana Pass were the stomping grounds of both famous and unknown photographers. Many of the photographs are published for the first time. The steam era covers little 4-4-0s to massive cab-forwards. The diesel era covers the freight and passenger locomotives that dieselized the railroad to the end of the line with SD70Ms and AC4400s. One chapter is dedicated to other railroads in the valley including Amtrak, Metrolink, quarry railroads and two monorails. Thirty-two pages of full-color photography from Daylight locomotives to the last days of scarlet and gray.
